Paul confronts the self righteousness of the Jew in this passage and shows that repentance is not an option but an ongoing necessity for all believers.


It’s very easy to spot other people’s faults and not so easy to spot our own. Jesus often confronted the false religion of the Pharisees and in this passage Paul is doing precisely the same thing. The riches of God’s kindness and patience are there to lead us to a place of frequent and heartfelt repentance. Repenting is not defeatism, rather it is stepping into Christ’s victory and is a response to his free and lavish grace upon our lives
