Chapter 7 of Romans is arguably the most controversial and debated chapter in the entire bible. Who is the man Paul describes in this passage? Is this a regenerate or unregenerate man? What implications can be drawn from answering this question as far as our understanding of sin and freedom from sin are concerned? Martyn Lloyd Jones, in his excellent treatment of this chapter, concludes that in order to answer these questions we must first be clear about what Paul is teaching in the first six verses, in particular to do with our relationship to the Law. What is the place of the Law for the Christian and how has our salvation in Christ affected this relationship? What does it mean for us to be ‘married to the law’ and how different is our new ‘marriage’ to Christ? Tim deals with these questions in this sermon.
