» Families Together on a Mission
Getting family life right is a high priority for us. This article gives some practical ideas as to how parents and their children can be on a mission together.
» Divorce and Remarriage
How the Church should respond to the question of divorce has provoked a great deal of sound and fury. As an increasing number of people come to church wrestling with these issues it is important that we have clarity about what we believe to be God's will on the matter. This paper sets out the position taken by the elders of New Community Church, reached after much study, discussion and soul-searching.
» Understanding Vision
Everyone seems to talk about vision, but often people are also confused or cynical about what vision means. Here is a simple guide to what we understand about the matter.
» You're killing me...
There is increasing pressure in our society to legalise euthanasia. This is seen as the compassionate thing to do. It is also see as the right thing to do as it respects the individuals right to decide when and how they die. What should the church say about this? In this paper (originally prepared for the Newfrontiers Theology Forum) Matthew Hosier gives some answers.
» Measuring Life
Western medicine has long been founded upon a particular set of moral commitments, which have defined the very character of the medical enterprise. At the heart of these commitments has been the belief that all human beings are of equal and inestimable moral value, by virtue of their humanity. This paper, written as a dissertation for an ethics degree, examines how medicine is moving away from these moral commitments, and the potential implications of this.
» The beer drinkers guide to New Community
Whether or not Christians should drink alcohol has long been a contentious issue. This article outlines the position taken by the elders of New Community.
» Spitting in the wind
Over the winter of 2006/7 New Community received a teaching series on the book of Ecclesiastes. This is a book that can delight, confuse and exasperate in equal measures, but it is a deep mine of great insight which deserves to be thoroughly explored. These notes sum up the lessons for life that we learnt from 'the teacher'.
» The Supremacy of Christ over Slavery
In March 2007 we celebrated the abolition of the trans-
Atlantic slave trade. This article explains how Christ is supreme
over all slavery.
» Hooked
Pornography exerts a powerful pull on many people, and no-one
is exempt from temptation. This story of a pastor hooked on porn is
an abridged version of an article that first appeared in Leadership
Journal (used with permission). It graphically describes the pull of
porn and its potentially devastating effects. It also gives hope that
the hook can be removed and healing received.
