Trip to Zimbabwe

Trip to ZimbabweMuch about Zimbabwe would bring thoughts of a dark and desperate land; rest assured in the midst of this political solar eclipse the Son is risen! For the first 10 days of March the New Frontiers Churches of Zimbabwe were in all out assault on the forces of evil in Zimbabwe. Two events were held: FRONT EDGE Zimbabwe (the first of its kind) and FARMING GOD’S WAY Conference.

FRONT EDGE will obviously bring back memories of what God has done here in the South East of London as our churches combined together to have a weekend devoted solely to Evangelism and guest services. In Zimbabwe the weekend began on Friday 2nd March with an insane anti-health and safety youth event called Cutting Edge. This was a Gladiator style event with upwards of 400 kids in attendance. New Community had their awesome representative in the shape of Colin Syred who proved an immense immovable object to teams of young people trying to achieve certain crazy tasks.

Lex Loizides from Jubilee, Cape Town preached the gospel and 20 people responded. The next day was devoted to evangelism training and then evangelists were sent out to 9 churches throughout the north of Zimbabwe. Ruwa, Harare, Bindura, Dotito and others all received their itinerant evangelist who had one purpose—preach the gospel!

In all there were 91 responses to the gospel. Matt, preaching in Bindura, had 8 responses, watched 27 people baptised in water, and enjoyed the favour of God. Simon Leigh-Jones preaching in a rural area, yeah mud huts, no water and all, to 130 people gathered under a cloth roof, had 13 responses and was overwhelmed at the work of God in rural Zimbabwe.

The FARMING GOD’S WAY Conference was held from the 5th of March to 9th March. At least 6 nations from Southern Africa were represented at Westgate Church in Harare. This amazing farming method, a revelation of God to several of the leaders in the church, is impacting 12000 families in Zimbabwe alone, not to mention Lesotho, Malawi, Zambia and others. Farmers sat and discussed an
array of issues ranging from the reproductive life of worms to the power of the gospel to transform communities. It is hard to capture how amazing this move of God is for rural Africa because our Western mindset cannot grasp the deliverance from hunger and poverty this farming method is providing for whole families.

The church is alive in Zimbabwe. The kingdom of God has an inflation rate even greater than that of the Zim dollar. The Son is risen and as Edward Buria proclaimed in one meeting, “Zimbabwe has an upright future!” because the church is fulfilling the great mandate left to us by our Lord.

London Church Plants

London Church PlantsOn Saturday 17th February 30 young people from New Community joined with 90 others from London Newfrontiers churches to give a boost to a new church about to start in Dulwich. The team gave out thousands of flyers, washed cars, distributed goody bags at the local stations and spent time in prayer and worship. The Beacon church launches on Sunday 4th March. It is being led by Andy Floyd, who was previously on the staff of King's Church Catford. More information about the church plant can be found at www.beaconchurchlondon.org.uk

Another London church plant we are looking to support is Revelation Church in Camden. Led by Stef Liston, Revelation is launching on 11th March. On Saturday 10th March a team will be out on the streets of Camden and Islington, aiming to distribute 250,000 flyers! For more info go to www.revelationchurch.org.uk

Newfrontiers Prayer & Fasting, 6-7th February, 20
Report by David Smith

Three times a year leaders from the Newfrontiers UK churches gather for two days of prayer and fasting. We asked David Smith, who is working with New Community as a volunteer this year, to report on his first experience of this event:

For two days the leaders of New Community attended prayer and fasting in Derby; joining with around six hundred leaders from across the country. Led by David Stroud we prayed throughout the two days for this nation, events and conferences, leaders and global mission. There was a real sense of God challenging the church for a greater faith including the miraculous and in the prophetic. We heard many testimonies from churches throughout the country of healing and movement in the Spirit. We therefore prayed fervently into the promises that God has given us as Newfrontiers for exponential growth. Words were brought throughout about the amazing days in the past and how we are living in amazing days now. Not only this but prophetic words of old were shared to encourage people by showing what God had done and to push us further in prayer.

The two days provided time for leaders across the country to recapture the vision that God has put onto our hearts as a family of churches. As a group of people it was clear that we expect great things within these days, a stepping out within the miraculous and an expectation for a greater sight of Gods Kingdom.

New Community Weekend Away

New Community Weekend Away In July 2006, 370 people from New Community went on a weekend away together at Ashburnham place in Sussex. Jo Hopley reports: This was my first church weekend away. I wasn’t brought up in a church scene like New Community Church so even the concept was a little unusual for me. If I am being honest, I was a little apprehensive about going: I thought church involvement for a whole weekend would be just too intense and I wasn’t hopeful of having any of the relaxation I usually crave at the end of a tough week at work.

We missed the evening worship session as we arrived late and had to put a tent up as dusk drew in, but the worship tent was close to our tent pitch so we couldn’t help to feel a part of what was going on. The tent seemed to be buzzing - a great hub of noise. My memory of the evening is of feeling quite overwhelmed by the beautiful setting and the uplifting singing emanating from the tent.

The worship sessions on Saturday and Sunday were incredibly uplifting. After the session ended in the morning on Saturday I remember feeling sad that I had to wait until the evening for another one. I didn’t want it to stop. There was so much time on Saturday for relaxing too. The raft building exercise in the afternoon was brilliant fun and we had plenty of free time to lounge around with friends, eating chocolate and chatting about nothing much. Actually, we had much more time to enjoy our friends than we usually do at home. And the whole thing was nothing like as intense as I had expected. In fact, it was nothing like I imagined at all.

There was a great sense of togetherness the whole weekend, and much joy and happiness around. It was lovely to feel a part of something special, something that matters. I feel very blessed to have been involved.

Newday 2-7th August 2006: Uttoxeter
Report by David Smith

Newday 2-7th August 2006: UttoxeterA year on from Nottingham, Newday had moved to Derby and around eighty of us from New Community joined the thousands of young people at Uttoxeter race course, greatly anticipating God to move through our generation.

As usual there was a heavy schedule of meetings and seminars throughout the course of the week, where a huge blue circus tent served as a venue. Evan Rogers led the worship for a few days with songs such as “Bambalela” and other words which cannot be pronounced, while to our amusement people looked on as we seemed to know all the actions before everyone else. Throughout the week
Stef Liston and Joel Virgo preached a series showing how our generation should listen to God and act on his promises; something we found challenging but exciting. For two evenings, Sibs Sibanda, also well known to us, preached on the prophetic words that our generation had been given and it was clear to see that God was moving as the Holy Spirit swept through the tent. Others, such as Dave Devenish, preached on the nations and many felt called to other parts of the world, while after Adrian Holloway’s preach hundreds came forward to respond and many were healed.

Also through the week outreach events occurred where we joined many for two days evangelizing in the city centre. Obviously there was the usual loud singing on the bus but worshipping in the city centre was not expected. People were open to the gospel and many wanted to find out more about God and the local church.

Newday this year saw many people saved and grow in their relationship with God, while others would say that it has changed their perspective of life for ever. We grew closer as a youth group and as a generation we saw the potential we have to go out into the nations of the world for the Kingdom of God.
